Barley and The Forest of Bowland

Things to do

  • Climb Pendle Hill

At the foot of Pendle Hill, Barley is a popular starting point to summit one of Lancashire’s most iconic peaks. What better way to toast a summit than a nice pint of Thwaites Ale at the bottom?

  • Discover Pendle Sculpture Trail

Designed to represent the infamous women accused as part of the Pendle Witchcraft trial, the Pendle Sculpture Trail tells the fascinating true story through an innovative and highly detailed pathway. Created by artist Phillippe Handford, the trail features ten ceramic plaques, each with its own unique symbols. Families can enjoy finding each plaque, presented in a treasure trail style to be hunted down and discovered. The trail also features several mythical creatures dotted throughout the wood, a “walking wall”, an eerie tree and a life-size Witchfinder General figure.

  • Walk The Pendle Way

For those experienced walkers looking for a challenge, this is what you’ve been looking for. Split into eight distinct sections, The Pendle Way is a 45-mile circular walk that features some of the area’s most gorgeous scenery, with roving hills and varied forestland galore. The trail is also home to some of the area’s most historic landmarks, including the famous lairs of the Pendle Witches in Newchurch, and the village of Wycoller, the site of the “Spectral Horseman” and one of the Brontës’ favourite spots. The landscape features stunning natural highlights such as waterfalls, ancient churches, and vast hillsides.
